Claddagh Ring
The Claddagh Ring is a traditional Irish symbol that has a romantic history.
The design is thought to be the creation of a man named Richard Joyce, who was a fisherman from the village of Claddagh near Galway.
He met a local woman and the two fell in love and got engaged to be married. However, before they could walk down the aisle, Richard’s fishing boat was invaded by pirates and the entire crew were kidnapped and sold into slavery in Northern Africa.
Richard ended up working for a goldsmith in Algeria, where he gained great skills working with precious metals.
He never forgot his girl back home in Ireland, and after many years of service, he was granted his freedom.
Richard made the long journey back home to Ireland where his love had waited for him.
He used his skills to create the Claddagh Ring for her. The couple got married and lived out the remainder of their lives happily in the village of Claddagh.
The Claddagh Ring symbol has since been associated with romance and Ireland.
